Not long until it'll be finished! Here are a few shots we've rendered recently (lots of comp work still needed):
Here is the animatic me and Billy worked on during January to give the group a more concrete idea of the composition of each shot and the timing/editing. However there is much room for change. The sound is also just to give us an idea of the sort of sounds and music that could work well with the film. To take a break from the look dev and lighting I thought I'd post a few bits of pre production that we've produced over the last couple of months.
Here are some really nice concepts painted by George just before Christmas that give a nice picture of the colours and atmosphere we hope to create. After playing around with the glass material and looking at reference images it was obvious I needed some textures to add imperfections to the bottle. Without these it looked way too CG! So I asked Tom to paint me some textures. He painted me some nice smudge, speckle and scratch textures. I layered these using a vray blend material, where the glass material I had developed is the 'base material' and the textures are layered on top as 'coat materials' which can be blended manually using sliders.
For close-ups in a dark environment (which we have a lot of) the smudge blend should be low, the scratch blend high and speckles blend medium. However when the camera is not so close to the bottle it's nice if you increase the smudges as they are not so obvious. Billy also modelled me a new bottle with slight surface variation which adds a nice ripple effect to the reflections. However the reflections need more work.. I might play around with a fractal bump again to see if it helps and study more reference to see how they behave in these sort of ligh Another issue is the speckled artifacts at the top and bottom of the bottle which can be reduced by increasing the max depth of the refraction. However, this does not solve it completely, so I'll have to look into it more. Although it wont be an issue in most of the bottle shots due to their close-up framing of the middle of the bottle. Here is an initial test for the glass material, using a vrayMtl with a black diffuse colour, low reflection value (dark grey) and maximum refraction value (white). I also applied a fractal as a bump to try and create more uneven looking reflections. Without this they look way too sharp and perfect. I have also given it a slight blue fog colour, which looks a bit too strong at the moment.
